When I came to The Ulysses News almost six years ago, I was looking for something to fill a void. I had lost my husband to cancer in 2020, and needless to say - I was lost.
I needed something to make me feel like I still mattered. That I could still do something that would make a difference. Something that might ease my pain from the loss of my life partner.
In the beginning, and still today, it is a struggle. There were lots of changes to be made when I first came and, a lot of people to meet.
Some met me with open arms - others kept me at arm's length, not sure what this "stranger" intended.
The road to today has not been easy by any means and it continues to be a daily challenge. However, it has been a journey that resulted in my meeting some very special people. People who have shown who they are over and over again. People who have given of themselves for someone else, and for this community.
Movers and shakers who are consistently looking forward. Looking for something to make this community the very best it can be. Bringing in new businesses, new events, new ideas. And then working to make them happen.
Individuals who get involved in their community through civic organizations, donating time and money to various causes. Who when told someone needed their time, didn't respond with "I don't have any", but rather with "where do you need me?" They roll up their sleeves and do what needs to be done, coming together with other like minded individuals with a common goal. Seeing not an impossible mountain, but just a hill to climb.
Time and time again I have witnessed someone in need and this community answer the call.
No, Ulysses isn't perfect. There is still a "bad apple" or two (maybe even a few more); however, there are a lot of good people here who give unselfishly to someone who is struggling. Who may simply "check in" to see how someone is doing. Doing things they don't have to do, but ultimately made a difference to the receiver of their giving.
Working here has been a journey that has shown me firsthand there are still good people in this world. People I am proud to know - many of whom I call friends. People I will never forget.
I am forever grateful for having met you all. Please never stop being the beautiful people you are. Your efforts have not been for naught. You are making a difference. Though there may be those who don't appreciate what you do, there are many more who do. .You have made a difference.
