The fifth annual David Meile Memorial Scholarship Fish and Fajita Fry July 5, "went really well", according to Marvin Meile.
Marvin's wife, Pam, said they were till trying to tally everything up as of last week.
"We had a good crowd," she added. "The weather was good. Everything went smoothly. Everybody just kind of shows up and makes it happen. We have several helpers who come on the day of. They show up and get 'er done."
The annual event was started in memory of the Meile's son, David, who passed away unexpectedly in 2021. His family has been hosting the event each year for the past five years in order to raise funds for local scholarships.
"People say they have a good time and they seem to be really appreciative of the event," Pam said. "People have gotten to where they look forward to it each year. There is joy in it."
Pam said the event just keeps getting bigger each year.
"This year we had 750 to 800 people - last year we had 650 to 700," she said.
Attendees of the event were able to fish, play cornhole, enjoy a good meal and some beautiful fireworks among other things.
"The fireworks were awesome this year," said Pam. "We had Chris Rappart out of Colorado do them. It was awesome. Each one was different. It was phenomenal and we had good attendance to watch the fireworks - we will have him back again next year."
For the meal, they served Crappie, perch and catfish, along with homemade cole slaw, homemade french fries, chicken fajitas and beef fajitas and all the fixings. Drinks served were tea and lemonade. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a gun raffle.
Funds raised from the annual event go towards scholarships the Meile's give out each year to a Ulysses High School graduate.
"We give out four to five scholarships each year," Pam said.
One of the reasons they don't have an exact accounting as yet, according to Pam, is that there are many who could not attend the event who send donations in after the fact.
