Thirty teams gathered at Bentwood Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 22, for the American GI Forum of Ulysses’ 27th Annual Ray Velasquez Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.
For the past three years, the tournament has honored the memory of Ray Velasquez, who started the event 27 years ago and served as its longtime director.
The tournament raises money to help local students continue their education. Local high school students who become American GI Forum members are eligible for scholarships, which may be renewed if they continue their education. Nontraditional students may also receive assistance after becoming members.
Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $100,000 for scholarships.
Irene Velasquez, state chairwoman and national vice chairwoman, said the organization wants to help anyone working toward a better future. Unlike many scholarships, the program does not require students to maintain a certain grade-point average.
“Become a member, and you are guaranteed a scholarship,” Velasquez said. “We want to see students succeed in life.”
Velasquez also expressed appreciation for the businesses and individuals who sponsor the tournament. As a thank-you, sponsors received complimentary meal tickets and steaks.
The American GI Forum is a congressionally chartered veterans and family organization that has served the Ulysses community since 1975. Its motto is, “Education is our freedom, and freedom should be everybody’s business.”
Anyone interested in becoming involved with the American GI Forum may contact State Commander Jose Olivas or Barbara Olivas at 620-356-4070.
