The first Responder of the Week for 2026 recognizes Bryce Twilleger, a Grant County firefighter who has spent the past five years answering the call when the community needs help the most.
Twilleger said he was initially drawn to firefighting for the adrenaline — the rush that comes with stepping into dangerous situations. Over time, that motivation has evolved into something deeper. Today, he points to the strong sense of brotherhood within the Grant County Fire Department and the opportunity to serve neighbors during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Whether responding to a structure fire, a vehicle accident, or a potentially dangerous gas leak, Twilleger understands that these calls often come on what may be someone’s worst day. Helping protect lives, property, and peace of mind has become the heart of why he continues to serve.
Outside the fire department, Twilleger brings experience from several fields of public service. He previously worked as a correctional officer with the Grant County Sheriff’s Department and now works as an Instrumentation and Electric Technician at the Jayhawk Gas Plant for Scout Energy. In addition, he has served nearly eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, where he currently holds the rank of Sergeant after time spent on recruiting orders.
Twilleger and his wife, Gabrielle, were married in 2021 and are kept busy raising their two-year-old daughter. He credits his family for making his demanding schedule possible.
“The only reason I’m able to keep such a busy schedule is because my wife is always willing and understanding to hold down the fort anytime I get a call to help,” Twilleger said.
Through dedication, service, and support from his family, Bryce Twilleger continues to embody the commitment and selflessness that define Grant County’s first responders.
