Annual Fish & Fajita Fry Lights Up The Sky

Posted

What started out as a gathering of family and friends has turned in to a legacy of love.

The sixth annual David C. Meile Memorial Fish and Fajita Fry took place this past weekend at the Meile farm. Set up and preparation for the event began July 3, with volunteers showing up to help at 9 a.m. They worked on getting everything ready until 6 p.m., Friday evening.

It is volunteers that have made this event possible, according to the Meile family.

"This event is truly made possible by all of the volunteer hours contributed to make it happen," the Meile's stated on a Facebook post.  "Doesn’t matter if you volunteer an hour or 10 or 30!  Every little bit makes it all possible! Thank you to all of those that help each year!"

Volunteers this year included Sheila Robey Koop who, as she has done in years past, made all of the deserts that were served. Koop's husband, Ivan, served as chef for the chicken fajitas.

The event itself kicked off Saturday, July 4, at 9a.m., and continued until late in the evening.

The community is invited to attend the event, where a  free will offering is collected. That money,. along with money raised through a silent auction and drawings, is then given back to the community through scholarships in David's name, after expenses are taken out.

Winners this year included Jill Smith who won the T Bucket hot rod; and Kelly Rae Howard, Travis Meier and Tyson Mullen who won 52 card draw. Only 200 tickets at $50 each were sold for a chance on the roadster.

There have been around 60 to70 silent auction items in the past, some of those are donated by local businesses and others are paid for.

Silent auction items this year included a camping set, signed memorabilia, a cooler full of goodies, gift baskets, firestone griddle, and a smoker.

Organizers also sold memorial T-shirts for the event.

Activities for this year's event included a corn hole tourney, trap shoot, fishing all day, and a fireworks show. Attendees were able to enjoy a fish and fajita dinner.

The event has become a favorite in the community that brings community members together.

David was the son of Marvin and Pam Meile. He passed away at the age of 50 in 2021.
