HUGOTON – Authorities from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office were called to investigate a fire in Hugoton Monday, November 18, which claimed one life.
A spokesperson for the KSFM provided an update to the incident last week.
"KSFM Special Agents were requested by local authorities after they responded to a fire with a fatality to a shed that belonged to the City of Hugoton's electrical department," the spokesperson stated in the release. "Three Special Agent/Certified Investigators were sent to assist with this fire event."
According to the spokesperson, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"The fire incident is still under investigation and is believed to be related to an overpressure event from natural gas. No foul play is suspected."
One person was killed in the blaze, and officials have not yet released their identity.
"Identification of the deceased is pending, and an autopsy is scheduled to help determine the official cause of death," the spokesperson said.
A resident of Hugoton identified the victim as a 26-year-old male; however, that information has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
According to a spokesperson from the City of Hugoton, the incident occurred around 8:20 a.m., Monday, at 1501 South Washington Street. The KSFM gave the address of the fire as 1601 S. Washington.
The shed belonging to the City of Hugoton's electrical department, is located near the Hugoton Power Plant.
