Cyclists participating in the 52nd annual Biking Across Kansas (BAK) made their way through on June 5th and 6th passing through Johnson and Ulysses as part of their 550-mile journey across the state.
The annual event draws riders from across Kansas and beyond, offering participants an opportunity to experience the state's communities, landscapes and hospitality while traveling entirely by bicycle. Riders began their day early as they continued westward through southwest Kansas, with many local businesses and residents welcoming participants as they passed through the area.
Founded in 1975, Biking Across Kansas has become one of the nation's longest-running annual bicycle tours. The week-long ride attracts cyclists of all ages and skill levels, who travel hundreds of miles while visiting communities across the state.
Several local and area residents took part in this year's ride, including Pamela Stewart, M.D., of Garden City; Paul Teetzen of Garden City; Genessa West of Garden City; Russ Tidwell of Garden City; Izzy Chick of Campo, Colorado; and Alden and Bryan Ellis of Johnson.
Teetzen and West rode as members of "The Team Sloth," a group participating in the statewide event. Tidwell participated as a one-day rider, while Alden and Bryan Ellis joined the tour as part-time riders for two days.
As riders traveled through Johnson and Ulysses, many stopped at local businesses for refreshments, supplies and rest before continuing their journey. Such stops provide a boost to local economies while also giving participants an opportunity to interact with residents and learn more about the communities they visit.
The route changes annually, allowing cyclists to experience different parts of Kansas each year. Along the way, riders face varying terrain, changing weather conditions and long days in the saddle, all while enjoying the camaraderie that has made BAK a Kansas tradition for more than five decades.
For many participants, the event is about more than the miles traveled. The tour offers a unique way to see the state, meet new people and build lasting friendships while celebrating cycling and small-town Kansas hospitality.
The 2025 ride marks the 52nd edition of Biking Across Kansas, continuing a tradition that has connected communities and cyclists across the Sunflower State for generations.
