Ulysses City Council moved forward with an anticipated addition to Main Street at its February 26 meeting by approving the purchase of equipment for Unity Plaza, a “pocket park” located between Medill & Thooft CPA and a vacant furniture store.

The equipment includes tables city administrator Luke Grimes said are not cheap.

“But they should last a good long time, and I think will fit with the quality we were wanting to go for in there,” Grimes said. “I think it’s going to be a terrific asset to downtown, we’re really pleased with how it’s come together.”

Grimes said the total cost is between $40,000 and $50,000.

Caleb Woods moved to approve the purchase, not to exceed $50,000 with a second by Mark Diaz, who added it will be a great improvement for Main Street.

The city approved a bid for chip seal at $37.75 per ton, which was the lowest of two bids received.

The city received one bid for the water line improvement project along U.S. Highway 160 that is expected to begin as soon as the bidder receives the materials. The $156,744 bid from Lee Construction of Garden City includes the city supplying fittings and fire hydrants for the project, which will run along the south side of the highway.

“This is a good bid,” said city engineer Pete Earles. “The original estimate was $176,000.”

The total cost with the fee from the city engineer is around $200,000 and the city has $204,000 available in the American Rescue Plan Act fund.

“We were planning to pay 15 grand over it out of our pocket and it doesn’t look like we’ll have to do that,” Grimes said.
