City Council Addresses Infrastructure, Budget Items At January 28 Meeting

The Ulysses City Council met January 28, to conduct official city business, including department head reports, financial approvals, and consideration of new and ongoing projects.

Under the Consent Agenda, council members approved Accounts Payable totaling $317,103.21, meeting minutes, and adjustments to authorized bank signatures.

Water Department Update

Adam Salas of the Water Department provided an update on wastewater operations, noting challenges faced during the recent cold spell. He reported that a leak in an older pipeline near Kepley School required city personnel to be on-site to manage the issue. Repairs are anticipated in the spring or after the conclusion of the school year.

Salas also discussed potential leak repairs at the golf course, a project expected to exceed $100,000. Council member Ken Warner expressed appreciation for the update and the department’s continued efforts.

Streets and Golf Course

City Streets officials reported concrete work is currently delayed due to cold temperatures, but emphasized that crews are prepared to begin work as soon as weather conditions allow.

Waylon DeWitt was introduced as the new Golf Course Superintendent and shared his goals for improving course conditions. Council members noted the city is still actively searching for a Greens Keeper position.

Old Business

Regarding the Woods Property, council noted no new action has been taken. Updates are underway to the City Water Shut-Off Policy, with officials confirming all water billing is currently accurate and up to date.

Council discussed allowing customers until February 25, to either bring accounts current or establish a payment plan. Mark Diaz suggested Sarah Britton post the notice online and that the newspaper needs to run the information on the front page of the paper.

The Ulysses News makes all placement decisions independently and determined on the information merited front-page coverage due to its direct impact on residents. Bills are mailed on the 10th of each month, and late fees will not be assessed until a later date.

New Business

Council approved a request for new playground equipment at Frazier Park, with an estimated cost of $25,000. The equipment will be installed in a location that allows parents to easily supervise their children.

Jered Schneider was approved for appointment to the City Planning Commission. Council also approved the purchase of a Ford F-150 for the City Street Department at a cost of $39,085.72.

It was announced that Missouri Street will be closed until critical repairs can be completed.

Council members expressed appreciation for one another’s work and cooperation. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
