City Council Reviews Fireworks Plan, Insurance Renewal at Recent Meeting

Posted

Ulysses City Council convened March 25, working through a full agenda that ranged from seasonal events to long-term infrastructure considerations.

Council members approved a consent agenda that included accounts payable totaling $192,718.38. During discussion, an inquiry was raised regarding the city’s budget structure and how funds are distributed among various entities. Officials indicated the matter will be addressed more thoroughly at a future meeting.

One of the evening’s more detailed discussions centered on the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display. Council reviewed options including show length, shell size, and overall quantity of shots, along with insurance requirements tied to the event. While one vendor was unavailable for booking, they provided input that helped guide the discussion. Questions were also raised regarding a previously approved show which never resulted in a signed contract.

Following deliberation, the council approved up to a 30-minute fireworks display, not to exceed $25,000, utilizing Victory Fireworks.

The council also addressed property insurance renewal, which is projected to increase approximately six percent. Council member Caleb Woods questioned the lack of additional quotes, prompting discussion about the city’s longstanding relationship with its current provider. Ultimately, the council renewed its policy at a cost of $196,000 through Progressive.

Additional updates included discussion on replacement timelines for the golf course irrigation module, as well as ongoing sewer maintenance needs and potential financing options for upcoming infrastructure projects.

An executive session called at the meeting resulted with no action taken.

During staff comments, City Administrator Luke Grimes reminded residents spring cleanup is scheduled for the second week of April. Council member John Duran noted ongoing concrete improvements throughout the city and at the golf course, while also extending birthday wishes to Grimes.

With no further business to come before the council, the meeting adjourned.
