Signs that greet visitors to Liberal let them know US Volleyball Olympian Sarah Noriega once called Ulysses home have been retired and new ones put up in their place.
According to Tyler Hook, Historic Adobe Museum in Ulysses, while he was working on a history story regarding Noriega recently, her mother, Carol Noriega, came in to the museum.
"We got Sarah (Noriega) on the phone while she was there and we were working on the story," Hook said. "We started discussing how one of the (four) signs that had been originally put up had been taken down, and that the three remaining signs were not very visible any more."
According to Hook, Ginger Anthony, director of the Historic Adobe Museum, had been instrumental in having the original signs put up.
"Ginger is the one who got them put up back when the Olympics was going on," Hook said. "She talked to Luke Grimes recently about the condition of the signs and three to five months later they got put up."
According to Grimes, Ulysses City Administrator, the Noriega family had approached him about the signs before.
"They asked if we ever took the original signs down, if they could have them," Grimes said. "They were in pretty rough shape, so I went ahead and replaced them and gave the Noriega family the old ones."
The new signs were made by local sign maker Dan Jury. One is located near Dollar General, one near Moody's Engines and a third close to where the old Dollar General was located, according to Hook.
