HOLLY, Colo. — Prowers County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew Griffith, a man from Alamosa, Colo., in Holly February 14, after a multi-jurisdictional shooting investigation that began in southwest Kansas and ended with a vehicle pursuit in Colorado.
According to a press release from Prowers County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began with a 911 call originating in Coolidge, Kan., around 6:45 p.m. reporting a drive-by shooting in that community. Deputies responding to the call were also notified of shots fired at a victim just inside Colorado near Holly, prompting an immediate law enforcement response.
While en route, deputies located the suspect vehicle and initiated a short pursuit. A deputy eventually used a tactical maneuver to stop the vehicle within Holly city limits, and Griffith was taken into custody without further incident.
Griffith was booked into the Prowers County Jail without bond on charges of Attempted Homicide and multiple weapons violations. Additional charges stemming from reported events in Kansas are pending as authorities in Garden City and Hamilton County continue their investigations.
Officials have indicated preliminary information suggests the incident may have started in Garden City, where a vehicle at a local business was reportedly struck by a bullet earlier that day. That matter remains under investigation by Garden City law enforcement.
At this time, authorities have not released further details on alleged victims or the motive behind the shootings. Anyone with information related to the case — including surveillance video or witness observations in the Garden City, Coolidge or Holly areas — is encouraged to contact the Prowers County Sheriff’s Office.
Griffith’s arrest caps a multi-agency effort involving Colorado and Kansas law enforcement, including the Lamar Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and emergency dispatch centers from both states.
As this is an active investigation, additional information may be released at a later date.
