Volunteers of all ages, from 4-H and swim team members to longtime residents, gathered on August 6 for the annual sweet corn harvesting and preparation event ahead of the upcoming community Home Products Dinner on September 15.
The morning kicked off at 6:30 a.m., as early risers departed the Civic Center to pick fresh sweet corn from the fields. By 8 a.m., a second wave of volunteers arrived at the Civic Center to shuck and clean the harvest, peeling corn from the truck stockpile and washing it before scrubbing the ears with brushes. The morning culminated at 9 a.m., when volunteers began cutting the kernels from the cob inside the kitchen.
Once processed, the corn is frozen and preserved, ready to be served at the Home Products Dinner.
It was lovely to see people of all ages coming together for this unique event, giving neighbors and friends a chance to catch up and hearken back to old traditions of food preparation. Corn Day served as more than just kitchen work, proving that the hard work of harvest can feel meaningful when shared by a community.
