HUGOTON - Efforts are underway to bring back a piece of Stevens County history, as organizers begin planning a revival of the historic “Gascapades” celebration to coincide with the Stevens County Fair, scheduled for July 24–31, 2027.
Originally launched in 1947 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hugoton Gas Field, Gascapades was a major regional event that drew crowds estimated between 10,000 and 15,000 people. The celebration featured parades, an airport fly-in, and a wide range of activities that showcased both the industry and the community it helped build.
Now, nearly 80 years later, local organizers Pam Brown and Shila Moore are leading efforts to ensure the significance of that history is not forgotten. Their goal is to create a modern version of the event that honors the legacy of the oil and gas industry while also recognizing the broader energy sector—including renewable energy—that has become a defining part of Southwest Kansas.
On April 23, 2026 a planning meeting was held, when community members and industry representatives gathered at the Stevens County Public Library to begin shaping the vision. The meeting served as an initial brainstorming session, with ideas ranging from historical exhibits to large-scale community events designed to reflect both the past and future of the region.
Organizers are encouraging community involvement as planning continues, noting that there will be numerous opportunities for individuals to contribute. In addition to the event itself, discussions are underway to develop a commemorative publication highlighting the history of the Hugoton Gas Field, including the people, companies, and stories that have shaped its legacy. Residents are encouraged to submit photos and personal accounts to help bring that history to life.
As plans continue to take shape, organizers say more details will be shared in the coming months, with the goal of creating a celebration that honors the past while looking ahead to the future.
