The Grant County Chamber of Commerce hosted its weekly networking coffee at Bene’s Sweetz ‘nd Spudz on Main Street to share local updates and announcements.
Grant County Recreation Commission
The final Midnight Swim took place at 10 p.m. Aug. 1 at the county pool. The final day for outdoor swimming before the school year begins is Aug. 12. On Aug. 15, the pool will host “Dog Day at the Pool,” allowing residents to bring their dogs for a swim.
The registration deadline for Pee Wee football and volleyball is Aug. 7, after which late fees will apply. The deadline for cheerleading registration is August 14th.
Health Services and Community Drives
Free sports physicals were offered 3-6 p.m. Aug. 4 at Ulysses Family Physicians. Pre-K and kindergarten students were able to receive required school physicals at the Grant County Health Department on Aug. 5.
DreamFirst Bank is collecting classroom items for area students. Community members can check needed supplies on the DreamFirst Bank Facebook page or visit the branch directly.
The Grant County Library is accepting school supply donations for students of all ages now through Aug. 10.
The Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital Volunteers announced a scrub sale 1-4 p.m. Aug. 13 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital.
The American Legion will host Lifeline Screening 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 10, offering cardiovascular disease and stroke risk assessments.
Community Events
The final “Pickin’ on the Porch” and Ice Cream Social of the season is set 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Adobe Museum. Attendees are invited to enjoy live music, and local musicians or singers are welcome to join in.
The End of Summer Bash is scheduled 6-11 p.m. Aug. 14, featuring food trucks, a beer garden, cornhole, bouncy houses, and yard games.
The Wine and Whiskey Walk is set 5-9 p.m. Aug. 22. Interested businesses can contact the Chamber to participate. Event t-shirts are available for pre-order via the Western Expressions website.
The Fall Fest and Car Show are scheduled for Oct. 3 on Main Street. Fall Fest will feature vendors, a live concert, a beer garden, and the return of the Car Show. Owners of classic cars, motorcycles, or side-by-sides are encouraged to register with the Chamber.
Local Employment Opportunities
The Get Ulysses has pinned a post at the top of their Facebook page for individuals seeking work. Local employers are encouraged to post open positions.
The local school district is recruiting bus drivers. Interested candidates can contact the district office for application details.
Pioneer Communications has openings for local technicians in Ulysses and Johnson. Job training is provided, and no prior experience is required. Applications can be submitted online or by phone.

Primary elections are scheduled for Aug. 4. Candidate profiles and interviews detailing platform goals are available on Get Ulysses and in The Ulysses News.
Transitions at The Ulysses News. Nancy Kletchka, outgoing Managing Editor of The Ulysses News, formally announced her departure from the paper and introduced Isabelle Holloway, a recent college graduate from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the incoming managing editor.
Kletchka also introduced Soila Ochoa, who will write part-time for the newspaper, and highlighted the salesman, Ervey, encouraging local business owners to support his sales outreach. Kletchka noted that she will be working remotely for a magazine and expressed her gratitude to the community for the opportunity to share its stories.
July Business of the Month
The Grant County Chamber of Commerce formally recognized Bene’s Sweetz ‘nd Spudz as the July Business of the Month, concluding the presentation with a ceremonial ribbon cutting celebrating the shop’s three years of operation on Main Street.
Co-owner Nora expressed her gratitude to the community and her team, including her sister and her niece, for supporting the business over the past three years. The shop is known for its baked potato dishes and bulk candy selection, and also offers “Pasta Wednesday” specials, operating from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and reopening from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Chamber members thanked the shop’s team for serving food, candy, and assisting with community events.
The next Grant County Chamber of Commerce Coffee networking event will take place Aug. 7, at Reflexology by Marcy.
