Ulysses News spoke with Nancy Borthwick of Grant County Senior Center January 27, to learn more about the ongoing food bank distributions serving local residents.
Grant County Food Bank holds distributions on the first and third Thursday of each month, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Civic Center South Room. The program is open to everyone, with no restrictions on who may receive food commodities.
First-time visitors are asked to complete a brief registration with minimal information. After the initial visit, participants check in at each distribution. This process helps the food bank track how many families are served and strengthens future grant applications that allow the program to continue and grow.
According to Borthwick, community participation and need for the program continues to increase. She noted that discussions with the Kansas Food Bank in Garden City are underway to secure additional food supplies to meet demand in the coming months.
The distributions rely on a dedicated group of 10 to 15 volunteers who regularly assist with organizing and handing out food. Borthwick expressed her gratitude for both the volunteers and the community members who participate.
“I appreciate all the volunteers who come out to help distribute the food,” Borthwick said. “We are blessed to have partners like the Kansas Food Bank in Garden City, and I want to thank everyone who comes to the distribution to receive food. It is such a wonderful event to be involved in, and our community is amazing.”
Community members seeking assistance or looking to volunteer are encouraged to attend an upcoming distribution or contact the Grant County Senior Center for more information.
