The unprecedented 2024 election saw a president elected to a second non-consecutive term for just the second time in American history in a so-called “Red Wave” that saw the Republican party flip the U.S. Senate. President-elect Donald Trump is the first Republican to win both the popular vote and Electoral College since George W. Bush in 2004.
Grant County voted decidedly Republican in the election, with Trump receiving 80.9 percent of the vote in the county. Surrounding counties were similar with 81.1 percent of Stanton County voters picking Trump, 86.8 percent of Stevens County going for trump, Kearney County 83.5 percent, Haskell County 81.5 percent, Finney County 66.7 percent, Hamilton County 82.3 percent and Seward County 69 percent. Kamala Harris won Riley County (Kansas State University), as well as Douglas County, Johnson County and Wyandotte County in the Topeka to Kansas City corridor.
Grant County saw 60.52 percent voter turnout.
Many Grant County candidates were on the ballot but ran unopposed. Tracy Mann retained his 1st District House seat and William Clifford retained his 39th District Senate seat, while Marty Long of Ulysses ran unopposed for the 124th District House seat.
Nationally, Donald Trump won both the popular vote with more than 75 million votes to 71 million for Kamala Harris; Republicans gained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House wasn’t called until November 11 when Republicans gained their 219th seat, with 218 needed for a Majority.
