This week’s Responder of the Week is Physician Assistant Melissa Borthwick Greeson, a familiar face in Ulysses who has dedicated more than a decade of her career to serving patients in rural Kansas.
Melissa grew up in Ulysses and, after more than nine years working in Tribune in both the clinic and emergency room settings, she returned home two years ago. She now serves patients at the hospital clinic in Ulysses.
Her journey into medicine was a calling. “God led me to medicine to help others, and to help them have the knowledge to help themselves most importantly,” she shared. That desire to not only treat but also teach patients has become a hallmark of her career.
Melissa attended Southwestern College in Winfield for her undergraduate studies, where she balanced academics with sports while managing a heart condition of her own. The advanced practice provider who worked closely with her cardiologist left a lasting impression, taking the time to explain complicated details and helping her navigate the challenges of her health. Inspired by that experience, Melissa decided to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant and went on to graduate from Wichita State University’s PA program.
Outside of work, Melissa is supported by her husband, Chad, whom she met while working in Tribune. The couple has been married six years and are raising two children—Connor, age 4, and Cara, age 2. They share a love of the outdoors and enjoy camping, snowboarding, and family adventures. Melissa says she is a “firm believer that exercise and sunshine are two of the most potent medicines,” which explains why she and her husband regularly take on challenges such as Spartan races and half-marathons.
A fun fact about the couple: Melissa and Chad share the exact same birthday—year and all—though Melissa jokes that she is “a few hours older.”
Melissa is also the daughter of Bryan and Carla Borthwick, who still call Ulysses home.
From her faith-driven passion for medicine to her commitment to helping others live healthier lives, Melissa Borthwick Greeson is making a difference for patients in Grant County and beyond..
