Kiwanis Club Presents At Weekly Chamber Coffee

The Ulysses Kiwanis Club is in need of new blood.

The Kiwanis Club played host to the July 11 Chamber Coffee at the Chamber office in Ulysses, and Keith Wood said they are actively seeking younger members to carry the torch.

“We wanted to host this today and tell people there is a Kiwanis Club in Ulysses,” said club president Keith Wood, adding he and Jay McGaughey were charter members of the club when it began in 1983.

“We need to get young people involved,” Wood said. “In Kiwanis, the emphasis is on children; we do some things for the older folks, too, but the emphasis is on children. And needless to say, as we’ve gotten older, we have probably done as much for the children as we’d like to and that’s why we want to get young people involved in Kiwanis.”

Wood said the club has already picked up a few people who are interested.

“Our main service project and our fundraising project that we have is the Kiwanis Flag Project,” Wood said. “We’ve had that practically since it was started in 1983.”

The Kiwanis partners with the Ulysses Cub and Boy Scouts for the flag project and this past 4th of July put out 280 flags across town.

“Needless to say, the Scouts are very, very important for us,” Wood said.

The Ulysses Kiwanis Club gives to the Kansas Kiwanis Children’s Fund, the Kansas Children’s Service League, the Ulysses Scouts, Grant County Library, as well as five scholarships to high school seniors for a total of $2,500. McGaughey added the local Kiwanis gives funds to Loaves and Fishes, and also the senior center and others.

If anybody wants to be a part of the flag program, contact any Kiwanis member or the Scout Troop 186 or 186-G (the girls troop), and the flags are put out during five holidays – Flag Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and Labor Day.
