The Knights of Columbus held its sixth annual Lenten Fish Fries March 7 and March 21 at the Grant County Civic Center’s South Room, and Paul Rosales with the Knights of Columbus said both fish fries were a success.

“We served approximately, the first fry, 375 plates, the second fry roughly about 275,” Rosales said. “We have volunteers bring in dessert.”

Rosales said the fish fries raised $2,000 once the bills were paid, with the money going towards various programs to support the community.

“We try and help out people in our church, people in our community,” Rosales said. “We donate to Loaves and Fishes.”

Rosales thanked the countless volunteers who organized, cooked for and donated to the event.

“It takes a lot of volunteers to put this thing together,” Rosales said. “A lot of volunteers, a lot of time. It’s not something that anybody is going to get rich off of and we have a lot of support putting this thing together.”

Rosales also thanked the civic center personnel.

The Knights of Columbus do the fish fries the first and third Fridays in Lent.

“We’d like to do it more often but it’s just a lot of work,” Rosales added.

During Lent, Catholics traditionally abstain from meat on Friday, but fish often substituted as a permissible food choice. The practice honors Christ’s sacrifice and the symbolism of fish in early Christianity. Lent is a period of spiritual preparation for Easter, and Catholics are encouraged to practice self-denial and penance, including abstaining from meat on Fridays.
