For more than five decades the Ulysses Lions Club Pancake Supper has provided Ulysses with the best pancakes and sausage around, all the while raising money to benefit those in need of sight and glasses.
The 2025 Lions Club Pancake Supper raised more than $1,100 last month and local Lions Club treasurer Corey Nagle said the club received several donations of glasses during the supper.
The Lions Club was working on scheduling a date for the 2026 supper at the Civic Center, and that the supper has been taking place for at least 50 years with the exception of a year during Covid and last year due to a scheduling conflict with the Grant County Civic Center and another pancake supper that was scheduled.
“It was going to be something that was going to be a timeline that was not going to work for a bunch of people, Nagle said, adding the club is on the schedule for the civic center for 2026.
Nagle said the pancake supper has been taking place for more than 50 years.
“I was born in 1972 and as long as I can remember growing up, my dad was a Lion and so that’s where I was exposed to it,” Nagle said. “So, as far back as I can remember, they have had one.”
This year, volunteers cooked the pancakes and sausage, and Girl Scouts helped serve and clean. An exact number of people who attended was not available.
While the pancakes and sausage were great, the underlying cause supported is an important one.
The efforts of Lions in the field of vision are expansive and well documented. The Lions Club SightFirst program has played a key role in reducing global blindness — building comprehensive and sustainable eye care systems, including projects that deliver eye care services, build or strengthen eye care facilities, train professionals and build awareness about eye health in underserved communities.
