Law enforcement officers, their family members and friends, local government officials, and more attended an event to honor the service by law enforcement in Grant County. The event, in honor  of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day January 9, was originally set to take place on the national day; however, Old Man Winter had different plans and the event was rescheduled to January 15.

"Due to the weather we moved it here today, but the spirit remains the same tonight," said Ulysses City Administrator Luke Grimes at the event. "We are here just to spend a few moments thanking you all for what you do. The exemplary service  you all exhibit to our community to make it a great, safe place."

Grimes then introduced Ulysses Mayor Ken Warner to speak to those in attendance.

"Thank all of the guests who showed up to show appreciation," Warner said. "And, a great welcome to our law enforcement, both to the sheriff's department as well as to the city police department. Thank you for making us and the city safe, knowing you all put your safety on the line to do that, especially in these crazy troubled times with what is going on in law enforcement. We do greatly appreciate what you do. On behalf of myself, the city council and the residents of Ulysses we want to say thank you for your efforts - it is greatly appreciated."

Grant County Commissioner Darrin Figgins also spoke at the event.

"On behalf of Grant County Commissioner, I want to take this opportunity to say that today in Ulysses and across Grant County we wanted to take a moment and recognize and thank the men and women of law enforcement who serve our community with dedication and courage," Figgins said. "Our officers answer the call at all hours, often placing themselves in difficult and dangerous situations so others can feel safe."

Figgins said law enforcement officers are more than "law enforcers".

"They are friends. They are neighbors. They are coaches. They are parents. They are community members who care deeply about this community that we call home," Figgins said.

Figgins also recognized the importance of the families of law enforcement officers.

"We recognize the families who support them," he said. "Sharing the sacrifices that come with this profession the strength and understanding makes their service possible. Law enforcement is about more than enforcing laws - it's also about building trust, showing compassion, working together to make and keep our community strong. Communities like ours need to have that strength - it truly matters to have those relationships."

In conclusion, Figgins spoke directly to the law enforcement officer.

"To law enforcement officers serving Ulysses and Grant County - your service is valued," he said. "Your sacrifices are appreciated and your commitment does not go unnoticed. We thank you for your service and all you do to keep our community safe."

Each of the law enforcement officials at the event were presented with a certificate to take to Ace Hardware in Ulysses where they will be given a Blackstone grill as a gift from local businesses who sponsored the event.

Those who sponsored the appreciation day included: Ace Hardware, Skyland Grain LLC, The Ulysses News, Dave's Electrical, Golden Plains Credit Union, Pioneer Communications, and Medill & Thooft, CPA.
