For nearly three decades, Jon Loewen has been a familiar and trusted face at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital.
A 1991 graduate of Montezuma High School, Jon pursued higher education at Fort Hays State University, where he earned both an associate’s degree in radiologic technology and a bachelor’s degree in medical diagnostic imaging in 1996. Shortly after, he joined the team at Bob Wilson Hospital—and 29 years later, he continues to serve the Ulysses community with dedication and pride.
Jon’s decision to pursue a career in radiology was shaped during his teenage years.
“I was influenced to go into radiology by spending time in hospitals in my teens during a few hospitalizations with my parents,” he recalled. That early exposure grew into a lifelong calling.
Over the years, Jon has witnessed countless changes at the hospital. From technological advancements in imaging to the transformation of the hospital itself, his career has been marked by growth and adaptation. One highlight came in 2007–2008, when Jon played an active role in designing the imaging department during the hospital’s addition and renovation.
“I have seen many changes…including working with many great staff, and seeing significant technology changes and advances within the imaging department,” Jon said.
He has also experienced the transition from county ownership to corporate hospital management.
Even after 29 years, Jon still finds great fulfillment in his work. He hopes to inspire others to follow the same path.
“I would maybe more than ever encourage the younger generation to consider medical imaging as a career field to pursue. It is rewarding to be a crucial part of the medical field and to help in diagnosing and treating our patients. There is high demand for imaging technologists today.”
When asked about standout memories, Jon fondly recalled his time working with Dr. Terrance “Jones” Cavanaugh in the late 1990s. Dr. Cavanaugh, who was board certified in both internal medicine and radiology, traveled from Great Bend to Ulysses twice a week to conduct exams and review imaging studies.
“He was extremely smart, a great teacher, and a fun and ornery guy,” Jon said with a smile. “We had tons of fun working with him, and I learned so much from his explanations as he read our studies.”
Beyond his career, Jon treasures time with his family. He and his wife Donna, married for 28 years, enjoy traveling together. They share three children: Kolin, Jenson, and Seth, who keep family life busy and rewarding. Jon also has a lifelong passion for golf, a pastime he continues to enjoy whenever he gets the chance.
From his teenage inspiration to nearly 30 years of dedicated service, Jon Loewen’s story is one of commitment, compassion, and community. His steady presence at Bob Wilson Hospital is a reminder of the vital role medical imaging plays in patient care—and the difference one dedicated responder can make.
