Lois Irene (White) Creveling, 92, passed away Tuesday May 12, at the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kan.
She was born June 20, 1933 in Lakin, Kan.; the daughter of Orlie and Prudence (James) White.
Lois grew up on the White family farm north of Lakin, along with her sister, Shirley and brother, Jimmy.
After high school Lois continued her education at Colorado Women’s College where she studied nursing, but ultimately decided nursing was not the career path she wanted to pursue so she transferred to Colorado State University, obtaining her degree as a Medical Technician.
In May of 1956, she married Marvin Biggs, DVM. Tragically, he passed away shortly after they were married.
Lois worked as a medical technician moving to Australia for a time and then on to Hawaii. While in Hawaii she met James C. Creveling; they married in February of 1966. They lived in Hawaii, San Diego, California, Garden City, and Ulysses before building their home north of Lakin.
Lois was a stay-at-home mom for many years while raising their son. She then returned to her previous career and spent many years commuting to Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, where she retired.
Friendships were very important to Lois. After relocating to Lakin, Lois continued to meet with a group of ladies for coffee each week in Ulysses. Lois took great pride in her role as a landowner and always thought very highly of her tenants.
She was a farmer at heart, often saying if she had been born in a different time that would have been her career path. Nevertheless, she was deeply involved in all aspects of their farm operation, she did the marketing and never turned down the opportunity to help with harvest. Lois and James enjoyed traveling together, riding the Amtrak to the Pacific Northwest and many destinations.
Lois and James, in their 80s, took a canoe trip through the Boundary Waters. Lois loved the outdoors. She especially loved the home they built together in Kearny County, spending many hours enjoying the view from their front porch.
Lois is survived by one son, Stanley Creveling, Reno, Nev.; a brother, Jimmy White, Lakin, Kan.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other extended family members.
She is preceded in death by her husbands: Marvin Biggs, DVM and James C. Creveling; her parents; and a sister, Shirley Henderson.
A Celebration of Life took place at 10 am, Monday May 18, at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin, Kan., with Pastor Greg Fletcher officiating.
A private family interment will take place for both Lois and James at a later time.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lakin Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 91, Lakin, Kansas 67860.
