Milton Moran Tomson, 81, passed away September 19, from complications associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Moran was born January 20, 1944, in Syracuse, Kan., to James Clifford Tomson and Mary Ent Tomson.

After graduating from Syracuse High School, he attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., and went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Washburn University in Topeka in 1969.

Moran was married to Jean Rickard in 1967.

They returned to Southwest Kansas in 1969 where he practiced law in Johnson, Kan. He served as County Attorney in Stanton and Hamilton Counties for a total of more than 20 years and spent many years practicing civil and criminal defense law, including legal representation for Pioneer Electric Cooperative in Ulysses for nearly 30 years and for multiple school boards across the region.

He was deeply involved in his community, contributing to many civic organizations and projects, and was active in the Johnson United Methodist Church.

He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his love of sports, woodworking, and gardening, and his many efforts to promote equal justice under the law, civil rights, and education.

Following his retirement, Moran and Jeanie moved to Golden, Colo., where they enjoyed remodeling a home that had been in Jeanie's family for many years.

Surviving family includes his wife, Jeanie; daughter, Emily; and son, Neil, along with Neil's wife, Megan, and their daughters: Willa and June. Moran is also survived by two brothers: Mort, Phoenix, Ariz., and Mason, Houston, Texas.

Moran was preceded in death by their daughter, Amy, in 2015; his parents, six brothers, and three sisters.

Cremation has taken place.

While a memorial service is not being done at this time, the family asks that any charitable donations friends wish to make in Moran's name be directed to ALS United Rocky Mountain (alsrockymountain.org) for the care and support of patients and families facing ALS and for further research to find a cure.
