Patricia Ann (Getty) Steen went to be with her mother, father, sisters, brother and her beloved husband Lawrence Steen, September 22.
Pat was the third child and third daughter of William Hooper Getty and Hazel Elizabeth (McStay) Getty. Pat was born on the Getty farm a mile east and a mile north of Downs, Kan., January 11, 1929. Pat joined her sisters: Jeanne Francis and Helen Esther (Phillipsen), followed by William Hopper II, Hazel Elizabeth (Hesse), Laura Elaine (Casper), and Steven Roderick.
Pat graduated from Downs High School and Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., with a teaching degree.
Pat and her mother drove to Ulysses, for a teaching interview. She was not impressed with Ulysses as it was far from home and the air was filled with dust. When she was offered the teaching job, she took it. She stayed in Ulysses for 75 years.
She met and married Lawrence Steen and in 1962 they purchased two building lots on North Hickok to build their home. Larry designed the house and bought the building materials from her sister Liz’s husband, Burns Hesse, Rossville, Kan., and had the materials delivered by train where they had to unload and get it to the building site. Larry built their house at 928 N Hickok where she lived until her passing.
Pat and Larry had no children. They enjoyed sports. They were very good at bowling and golf. They traveled to play golf and bowl in tournaments and to see Larry’s favorite Detroit Tigers baseball team play. She was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
Pat was also a collector. She collected stuffed animals, especially pigs. She had all kinds of pigs. She also collected coins, stamps, and small figures. She loved putting puzzles together, doing the daily crossword from the newspaper and reading. She loved working in her yard and raised a variety of plants.
She had plenty of nieces and nephews to mourn her passing, along with her friend Judy Mills and baby brother, Steven.
A private interment will take place at the Ulysses Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Grant County Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
