A popular Grant County event is set to make a return this month, and last Friday’s Chamber Coffee at Pioneer Electric Cooperative was all about the return of the Grant County Community Health Fair.
“It’s Cooperative Month, that’s why you get to come out and see our smiling faces during the month of October - great opportunity for us to celebrate,” said Anita Wendt, vice-president of Energy Services at Pioneer Electric. “We have evermore to celebrate this time because it is going to be a community health fair.”
Pioneer Electric played host to the Community Health Fair along with Pioneer Communications during their annual meetings, but the health fairs stopped during Covid and the annual meeting became an evening dinner meeting. The evening annual meeting dinner stuck, but Wendy and Becky Zarr were left with figuring how to re-incorporate the health fair.
“That was something we didn’t really want to lose in our community,” Wendt said, adding the health fair has been in the making for at least two years.”
Wendt said the community is great about supporting a lot of health initiatives, “utilizing what was happening is we were starting to have multiple small events that were held throughout the year,” Wendt said. “And so our vision truly was to be able to kind of roll this into a one-stop shop and be able to support all of our health needs for all the folks in our community.”
One of the challenges was combining the Health Fair with the Women of Purpose Cancer Screenings.
The phlebotomist will be on site and all of the blood chemistry profiles will be at no charge, and there will be five tests that include a small fee - Prostate Specific Tests, Thyroid Testing, and A1C Glucose testing for men at a cost of $15 apiece - and for women, PAP and breast exams will be offered.
Booths will be onsite with healthcare information, and cancer screenings will be provided free of charge.
New this year is that free blood screening test results will be emailed instead of sent through the postal service, which means they will arrive in about a week.
The Community Health Fair is from 7-11 a.m., this Saturday, October 26, at Grant County Civic Center.
Grant County Health Department, Common Spirit Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, several physicians, and dental offices, blood pressure checks and BodyMass Index checks will also be available.
“Take advantage of the opportunities you have to go through some of that screening as you need it,” Wendt added.
