Kansas Senator Roger Marshall was a special guest February 17, at the Rotary Club meeting hosted at Grant County Library, part of a southwest Kansas tour that began earlier in the day at Pancake Day in Liberal before stops in Elkhart and Ulysses.
During his remarks, Marshall focused heavily on agriculture and rural issues. He discussed available tax credits tied to corn used in ethanol production and emphasized federal funding efforts aimed at supporting rural communities. Agriculture, he noted, remains central to the region’s economy and to national energy discussions.
Healthcare costs were also a topic of conversation. Marshall acknowledged the financial strain many families are experiencing, pointing to rising program costs and broader economic pressures. While wages have increased in some sectors, he said not all economic challenges can be addressed solely through decisions made in Washington, D.C.
Following his opening comments, the floor was opened for public questions.
One attendee raised concerns regarding the development of artificial intelligence data centers. Marshall encouraged caution as discussions around AI infrastructure continue, noting the importance of carefully weighing long-term impacts.
The senator also addressed credit card interest rates, expressing support for efforts to bring rates down. He indicated that a 10 percent cap would be more favorable compared to rates that can reach as high as 28 percent.
Marshall concluded his visit after taking additional questions from those in attendance.
