A silent auction, live auction and a drawing for a Jeep were some of the highlights of the 2nd Annual Southwest Miracles Shindig Saturday at the Grant County Civic Center. The steak dinner wasn’t too shabby, either.

The annual Grant County Gives event brought in more people than the first event a year ago.

“The community is a big reason why we do this, and we learned, we CAN do this,” said Terry Tanking, who was a volunteer since the beginning, and took over Southwest Miracles in Liberal three years ago, expanding to Ulysses last year. “One of our biggest deals is ‘Miracles happen when the community cares.’”

Ofelia Guzman runs the Ulysses operation.

“I couldn’t do it without the help of all of my volunteers,” Guzman said. “This is our only fundraiser of the year.”

A total of 155 tickets were sold for the first Shindig and 122 individuals attended. That number grew to 169 attendees Saturday night.

“Everything that we do here stays local,” Tanking said. “We have storage units here in town that are full of medical stuff.”

Southwest Miracles helps individuals with medical equipment, pharmacy help and medical travel for both Ulysses and Liberal, and the Shindig is the only fundraising event.

The Ulysses High School wrestling team helped throughout the night.

“I want to give a special thanks to the Ulysses High School wrestling team for helping us,” Tanking said. “They helped us last year and we like to get the community involved with what we do.”

Golden Plains Credit Union also presented a check for $1,000 to the cause.
