Staff Report

Colby senior quarterback Casen Carroll threw five touchdown passes and Guy Tubbs added a 20-yard scoring run as the Eagles traveled to Ulysses to open the 2024 season and went home with a 39-6 win over the Tigers. Brayden Foss and Kasey Giesenhagen each caught two touchdown passes and  Cody Wright the other as the host Tigers were short a few players for disciplinary reasons.

Colby built a 39-0 lead before Ulysses salvaged some pride with a 33-yard scoring strike from Tyce Perez to Julian Meraz with 38.5 seconds remaining in the game.

The Eagles built a 25-0 halftime advantage off four scoring passes by Carroll, and increased their lead to 39-0 in the third with Carroll’s fifth scoring pass and the run by Tubbs.

Freshman quarterback Tyce Perez was 14-for-33 passing for 133 yards, the touchdown to Meraz and two interceptions. Joel Guaderrama caught six passes for 45 yards, Meraz three for 42 yards and the score, Nicholas Martinez one pass for 20 yards, Preston Hittle two for 15 yards, Jaxon Curl two for 10 yards and Parker Browning two for six yards.

Guaderrama led with 23 carries for 76 yards and Meraz rushed twice for two yards.

Guaderrama had six total tackles, Meraz five, Jesus Miranda and Browning four each, Dallas Garza, Emilio Guzman, and Brody Britton three apiece, Caden Ledesma two and Malikah Garcia two. Meraz intercepted one pass and recovered a fumble.

Meraz added 60 return yards, Preston Hittle 31 and Martinez 15.

The Tigers hit the road for the next two weeks, starting this Friday with a short jog south to Hugoton. The Eagles opened the season last week with a 48-0 win over Southwestern Heights.
