Southwest Miracles has only been in Ulysses for three years, but it has already made a huge impact on the community, providing medical supplies to individuals who need them. Southwest Miracles presented the weekly Chamber Coffee at the Grant County Chamber of Commerce on the eve of its Second Annual Grant County Gives Shindig steak dinner and Jeep raffle.

“Southwest Miracles started in Liberal 15 years ago and they have really grown over there,” said Ofelia Guzman. “They realized the need was greater than just in the Liberal area so they expanded to Ulysses and we’re glad to be able to help our local families.”

Southwest Miracles is able to help with more than supplies, it’s all medical needs from getting to an appointment, food, fuel, and hotel rooms.

“We have helped with medical equipment, wheelchairs, scooters, that type of stuff,” Guzman added. “We have helped some with medicines from the pharmacy.”

Last year Southwest Miracles donated an adult changing table for special needs individuals at Ulysses High School.

Southwest Miracles held its Second Annual Shindig steak dinner this past weekend at the Grant County Civic Center that featured live music baby Liberal-native Lendon James, live and silent auctions, and a drawing for a 1987 Jeep.

“All of the money that is raised at this event stays in Grant County,” Guzman said. “We have helped a couple of families from Lakin and Johnson, but the majority of it stays here in Grant County.”

The Shindig is the only fundraising event for Southwest Miracles.

åççbe raised (at the Shindig) is what have to work with for the year,” Guzman said.

Anybody who needs help with medical supplies can call (620) 626-5035 or (620) 952-3563 or find Southwest Miracles on Facebook.

Terry Tanking and his wife took over Southwest Miracles in Liberal three years ago and expanded to Ulysses, which is where is wife is from.

“We saw the need and that’s when we came over here and started this,” Tanking said, adding that they’ve received 200 phone calls and have been able to help more than half of those.
