Last week's Grant County Chamber of Commerce Coffee was hosted by a new business - Sugar Momma's Custom Cakes and Cupcakes.
New Chamber Director Robin Leonard welcomed everyone to the coffee and then turned the program over to Elizabeth Boese, owner of Sugar Momma's.
"I started this about seven years ago just as a hobby," Boese said. "It’s turned into so much more. It’s my absolute favorite thing to do. I can’t even describe all the support I received from my family and friends. I appreciate everyone.”
Boese dream became more of a reality with a chance conversation between her and Grant County Economic Development Director Bob Dale.
"Eco development has kicked around the idea to create a business incubator for a long time," Dale said. "When this building became available, we started talking about possibilities for it," Dale said. "We ended up buying it. It was right about that time I ended up having a conversation with Elizabeth at Alejandro’s and talking about her baking business. She said my dream is to someday have a store on main street and sell my cakes and goods in a store front on main street.”
Dale asked Boese if "she was serious about that" dream, to which she replied she was.
“I said, 'we might have something to talk about,'” Dale said. "So, once we got the building, I told her it may take a while. I didn’t want to say something too much in advance, you never know how the cards are gonna fall. You hate to make promises you can’t deliver. We got it done; the board decided, and we contacted Elizabeth - she was on board with it."
This was a first for the Eco Devo entity.
"One of the things about this incubator, we didn’t know what we were doing," Dale said. "This is our first time doing some of this, so we are really trying to feel our way through it."
Boese stepped up to help make it happen.
"Elizabeth said, 'if you would like I can take on the role of being the manager over the building'," Dale said. "I said that was perfect - that’s exactly what we need. I’m very proud of Elizabeth and what she has done here.”
Boese dream of having a storefront business on Main Street is on its way to reality - and all because of a dream and a chance meeting.
