Third Time's Not 'A Charm' For One Local Resident

Ulysses Police officers were kept busy when a driver allegedly went against traffic laws not once, not twice, but three times.

According to Chief of Police Ron Vagher, officers had multiple pursuits involving one individual which began around 11:35 p.m., July 15.

"We had an individual disregard a stop light and then fled from officers when they attempted to stop them," Vagher said. "Officers ultimately decided to disengage from the chase for public safety reasons."

According to Vagher, the motorist drove out of town, but made the decision to return.

"The motorist came back in to town driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed," Vagher said. "Once again, they disregarded a stoplight."

The motorist then fled town again, with officers deciding to disengage from a high speed chase.

"They then returned to town a third time," Vagher said, "and this time they were driving in right in to the path of a patrol car, forcing the officer to take evasive maneuvers."

The third trip in town was the last one.

"Officers were able to get the subject stopped and in to custody," Vagher said.

The motorist, Irma Leyva, 18, was arrested for Assault and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Flee and Elude, and possession of tobacco/alcohol. She was  taken to Grant County Jail where she was released July 18, after posting a  $10,000 cash bond.

In other recent police calls, officers arrested Zach Stapleton at around 10:35 a.m., July 20. Stapleton has been charged with damage to property and domestic battery following an incident on south Elm. Damages to a vehicle in the incident have been estimated at more than $1,500. Stapleton was taken to Grant County Jail where he is being held without bond.
