Tight Race Defines City Council Election

Posted

Tuesday, November 4, and days leading up to Election Day, voters across Grant County turned out to cast their ballots for candidates running for Ulysses City Council and USD 214 School Board. As results began to come in that evening, it quickly became clear the City Council race was too close to call.

According to the unofficial results released on election night, Bravane Phelps led the City Council race with 466 votes, followed by Mark Diaz with 298, Caleb Woods with 285, Shawn Rider with 284, Ken Warner with 279, Aubree Bohl at 238, Silas Rosales with 163, and Lucy Guerra with 91. With only a handful of votes separating several candidates and three seats up for election, the final outcome may hinge on absentee and provisional ballots.

Those ballots were  reviewed during the canvass November 12, where election officials were to determine which meet the requirements set by the State of Kansas before adding them to the final totals.

In the USD 214 School Board races, Cara Britton secured 573 votes to Josh Eddie’s 296 for Position #3. The remaining races were uncontested, with Stacia Gee elected to Position #4, Mike Meyer to Position #5, and Daron Cowan to Position #6.

Election officials and volunteers worked diligently to ensure a smooth process both on Election Day and in the days leading up to it, and the community extends its thanks for their time and dedication. Due to the close nature of the City Council race, official results will be followed up and reported once the canvass is complete.
