President Donald Trump delivered his first official State of the Union address of his second term Tuesday evening before a joint session of Congress, laying out his vision for the nation, touting his administration’s accomplishments and drawing sharp partisan reactions from lawmakers.
Speaking for roughly one hour and 48 minutes — the longest State of the Union in U.S. history — Trump portrayed what he called a “golden age” of achievement in the United States, placing particular emphasis on economic growth, strong national security and immigration enforcement.
Trump opened the address by highlighting achievements in the economy, including claims of rising incomes and falling inflation, and honored guests in the House gallery, such as the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team and military servicemembers awarded medals for valor.
Throughout the address, Trump repeatedly insisted that the nation is “winning so much” and asserted that his policies have strengthened the country at home and abroad. He called on Congress to support his agenda, including bolstering border security, tightening immigration laws and protecting American jobs through trade policies.
The president also used the speech to directly challenge Democratic lawmakers, blaming them for economic hardships and policy disagreements and urging unity around his vision for the nation’s future. Hosts from both sides of the aisle reacted sharply, with Republicans offering sustained applause and many Democrats responding with criticism or silence.
The address took place amid continuing partisan tensions. Several Democratic lawmakers staged protests or were ejected from the chamber early in the evening, including Rep. Al Green, who was escorted out after holding a protest sign as Trump began speaking.
Democratic response following the address, delivered by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, disputed Trump’s claims on the economy and cost of living and criticized the administration’s approach to key issues such as affordability and immigration enforcement.
National reaction was mixed. Supporters praised Trump’s assertive defense of his policies and message of American strength, while critics challenged several of his assertions as misleading and questioned whether the administration’s record matched his optimistic portrait.
The speech set the stage for heightened political debate ahead of the midterm elections and underscored the deep divisions in Congress and across the country as the president seeks to maintain support for his legislative priorities.
