When Dixie Flowers took over Twice Upon A Time in 2013, the building already had a long history in Ulysses. Since then, the business has thrived.

“What I’ve been doing here for 12 years now is kids’ resale clothing and toys and all that stuff,” said Dixie Flowers, proprietor of the business at 105 South Main Street. “I had adult clothing for quite a while, like a couple years, and decided not to do that. And now I’ve really gotten back into the quilting and sewing.”

In the back area of the business is a large yarn area, which Teresa Hammond takes care of.

“We’ve got all different kinds of yarns, acrylics and wools and Alpaca and Satin and anything that you could want to use to knit, to crochet,” Hammond said. “It’s more along the lines of the knitting than it is necessarily crochet, but we still have a lot of crochet material, too.”

The price is reasonable, and the selection is large.

Hammond also said the Grant County Senior Center donated a large amount of yarn, and Hammond said that anyone who wants it can stop by to see it.

“If you want it, come in and see us and we will let you take whatever you need,” Hammond said. “There may be a small gratuitous fee to it, but not much. There’s a lot of really good stuff in here, too, and it’s a lot of good crocheting yarn. It’s not big stuff, but it is a nice crocheting yarn.”

Hammond discussed a knitting/crocheting group that has formed and meets at Twice Upon a Time. It was formed when Hammond raised Alpaca and met at her farm. Now the group meets at Twice Upon a Time.

“Having it in town, it’s a lot more accessible,” Hammond said, adding the group meets Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. “It’s just a chill session for a couple hours.”

In other chamber business:

•Chamber Director Marita Hauser listed upcoming events, including the Local Business Owners and Managers meeting that takes place the second Wednesday of every month at Bear Creek Coffee. The next meeting is at 7 a.m., March 12.

•Grant County Library continues to sponsor Coats for Kids. Take gently used and clean coats, hats and gloves to the library.

•American Red Cross Blood Drive is from 12-6 p.m., February 27 in the South Room of the Grant County Civic Center. Also in the South Room from 5-8 p.m., February 22 is the Lions Club Pancake Supper. Lion Gary Boldt said there’s a free will donation and in addition to pancakes, diners will get a couple of sausage patties.

“There will be an EMT team out there where you can get your blood pressure and your blood sugar checked free of charge,” Boldt said, adding that proceeds go towards eye exams for children getting ready to start school, as well as for anybody who needs eyeglasses. “Our local eye physicians are very cooperative in providing their part in that kind of service.”

Boldt said the Lions still collect used glasses.

Attendees are asked to park in the west parking lot.

•The Senior Center will have a dance featuring the Cottonwood Band from 6:30-9:30 p.m., February 22, as well as Bingo, for a free will donation or a canned good to be donated to Loaves and Fishes. Director Nancy Borthwick said the center offers Friendship meals daily for those who sign up for it. Diners can go to the center or have the meal delivered. The cost is $3.50 for those over 60, and the food is homecooked, not pre-packaged. The center seals the meals to keep them fresh.

•The 3rd Annual Stitches in Time Quilt Guild is March 20-22 and registration is no longer open. More than 85 registered and seven vendors will be on hand. The event takes place at the Grant County Civic Center.

•Grant County Tourism is seeing increased interest in the Veterans Banner Project, so if anyone would like to see their veteran honored with a banner on Main Street, contact Grant County Chamber.

The next Chamber Coffee will be this week at Medill & Thooft.
