KIOWA COUNTY - A woman and two children are dead following a crash on U.S. on Wednesday.

The accident took place at 3:35 p.m. May 9 on U.S. 54 about a mile east of Mullinville in Kiowa County. The Kansas Highway Patrol said a Ford F-150 was heading west in the eastbound lane. An eastbound semi went left of center to avoid the pickup, but the Ford reentered the westbound lane, and the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the Ford and two children in the pickup died at the scene. The highway patrol identified them as 68-year-old Teresa Davis, 10-year-old Hunter Welch and 13-year-old Travis Welch. They were from Meade.

The 22-year-old California man driving the semi was not hurt.

It's unclear why the pickup was in the opposing lane of traffic. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.

The Welch boys were students at Fowler Grade School, USD 225 said.

"It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the tragic loss of two of our beloved elementary students, Travis and Hunter Welch, earlier today (Wednesday) in a car accident," the district said in a statement. "Our entire school district community is grieving this devastating news, and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loves ones of these precious children during this incredibly difficult time."

The district said support services would be provided.
