Two Ulysses Police Officers Suffer Minor Injuries

Two Ulysses Police Department officers suffered minor injuries during a traffic stop at 11:15 p.m., June 9.

According to Ulysses Chief of Police Ron Vagher, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Daniel Chavez, 44; however, Chavez "refused to stop for officers for several blocks".

They were eventually able to get Chavez stopped in the 300 block of South Sullivan.

"When officers went to take him in to custody, he resisted arrest," Vagher said.

The two officers were able to ultimately get Chavez in to custody; however, during the arrest, the officers were injured.

"They suffered minor injuries," Vagher said. "One required medical attention, but nothing that required hospitalization."

Chavez was booked in to Grant County Jail on several charges: fleeing, attempting to elude, driving while suspended, illegal tag, expired registration, no insurance, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Chavez was released June 15, after posting a $25,000 cash or surety bond.

In other action by UPD:

•Officers responded to a battery complaint reported at 8:28 p.m., June 10, on Stever Street, between two females. A case has been filed and citations were issued through municipal court.

•A theft of a license plate being taken from a vehicle at Miracle Car Wash was reported at 12:18 a.m., June 11.

•The victim of a  hit-and-run reported at 12:16 p.m., June 14 in the 900 block of South Comanche has decided not to pursue filing charges in the incident. Their vehicle suffered minor damages..

•A theft reported at the sheriff's office at 2:23 p.m., June 14, involved an incident which occurred in the 500 block of South Colorado. The victim's wallet containing some cash was taken from their unlocked vehicle. Ulysses Police Department urges all citizens  to lock their vehicles when unattended, as there have been auto thefts and burglaries reported in Ulysses.
