A former Ulysses High School graduate was shot and killed in Wyoming.

Kevin Hefley, 52, graduated with the UHS class of 1991. He also has lived in Walsh, Colo. - where his father, Fred Hefley, a well known farmer and rancher in the area, still resides.

Officials from the Laramie County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a fatal shooting at around 4:22 p.m., June 24, in the 1200 block of County Road 157 in their county, near Pine Bluffs, Wyo.

Upon their arrival, officials said, they found Hefley, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities in Wyoming have said they have "identified a shooter" and that he is "not a threat" to the community. However, no arrests have yet been made in the shooting.

Although Wyoming authorities have not yet identified the "shooter",  friends of Hefley have said the person who shot him was a "prominent banker and rancher" in that area.

According to Laramie County Sheriff Brian Kozak, they are investigating the incident, in which the alleged shooter is claiming self defense, and are hopeful to have a determination within a week or so.

Hefley was the pilot and owner of Airtime Aerial - a crop dusting business. He was known to do spraying jobs not only in Wyoming, but also in Arizona, Texas and other states.

He grew up in Walsh and Springfield, Colo., and Ulysses. He later attended Kansas State, where he was on the rodeo team. Hefley was a bareback rider.

A Life Celebration for Hefley is planned for 12:30 p.m., August 2, at the Walsh Community Building, Walsh, Colo.
