Ulysses High School Theatre Delivers Lively Performance With “Little Shop of Horrors”

The stage lights of Ulysses High School shined bright this week as the UHS Theatre Production presented its 2025 musical, Little Shop of Horrors. The performances, held November 13th, 14th, and 15th, drew enthusiastic crowds and plenty of laughter as students brought the quirky, high-energy story to life.

This year marks Amanda Coffey’s first as the program’s director, and the choice of musical was one close to her heart. “It’s one of my favorites,” she shared, describing it as “high energy and funny.” Coffey, who grew up performing in musicals and singing herself, noting that this year’s cast showed remarkable dedication and growth.

With roughly forty UHS students involved in the cast and crew, teamwork was essential. “It’s been a good year,” Coffey noted, “though it’s taken extra time to bring out all the young talent we have.”

The musical pit also featured a familiar and beloved face—Leo Jo Lowry, who has been playing piano for Ulysses High School musicals for over fifty years. Support came from music teacher Aaron Hammond and Jonathan Yust, who helped round out the pit’s talent. Volunteers such as Donna Loewen and Kristi Breese also contributed to bringing the production to life, helping behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly.

From the moment the curtains opened, the show burst with color, humor, and energy. The opening number set the tone for an evening of strong performances and genuine enthusiasm. Every actor, musician, and crew member brought their best to the stage, earning applause and laughter throughout the night.

Following the performance, several students shared reflections on their experience. One performer, participating for the first time in their senior year, said it had been “an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.” Crew members mentioned that among their favorite numbers to perform was “Suddenly Seymour,” a highlight that resonated with both cast and audience alike.

Audience reactions were equally positive. One attendee admitted to being unfamiliar with Little Shop of Horrors before the show but left “pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained.”

As the final curtain falls on the 2025 production, thoughts are already turning toward what next year’s show might bring. If this year’s effort is any indication, the tradition of outstanding UHS theatre will continue to grow and inspire.

Congratulations to the entire cast, crew, and musical team for a job well done!
