Are you a person who likes to help others? Then Ulysses Lions Club may be for you!
The current Ulysses Lions Club was chartered January 1, 1952, and has been active since that time, providing help with sight and other health needs information.
Our Pediavision screener is utilized as a first step in determining the possibility of needing corrective lenses. Each year, members of our club test pre-schoolers and kindergarten students at Hickok School as a first step in determining the advisability of further testing by Ulysses Eye Care (or another optometrist) towards good vision, which helps children have better success in school.
For children or adults who think they cannot afford the cost of glasses, the club has a two-page form (in either English or Spanish) which can be filled out requesting assistance with the expense. A Lions Club committee reviews the information given (income and expenses), and usually approves the request. If approved, the Lions Club gives a voucher to Ulysses Eye Care, and they withstand the rest of the cost. (This is a once in a lifetime approval.)
In December, we enjoy sacking the candy the Chamber gives to the kiddos for the Christmas movie at the theater.
At the Ulysses High School Pink Out each year, the Ulysses Lions Club sells pink cotton candy (currently $2 per bag) and donates the proceeds to Pink Out.
In February, Ulysses Lions host a Pancake Supper at the Civic Center Lawson Room, with pancakes, sausage, coffee and tea. This year, the Pancake Supper will be February 22, from 5-8. Donation only. We are so blessed to have some youth of the county to come and help set up and serve. Usually, it's Boy and Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H members. We also have volunteers from the EMS who do free blood sugar and blood pressure checks that evening.
During the Grant County Fair in July, we have a booth, where we sell pink cotton candy, non-alcoholic drinks and candy.
Once a year, there is a State Band Camp for high school students. Ulysses Lions Club pays a good portion of the fees for this camp to those who attend from Ulysses.
Ulysses Lions Club likes to help the youth when we can. We're hoping to start a LEO Club (Lions Club for high school age youth).
Ulysses Lions Club meets every second and fourth Monday nights at 7 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 321 West Grant. We'd love to have you come visit us. That's free, as is the first year of membership.
