Ulysses News Earns 24 Awards From Kansas Press Association

The Ulysses News is proud to announce they will be receiving 24 awards at this year's Kansas Press Association convention in June. Nine of the awards are for first place.

Tyler Hook will receive first place honors for column writing.  Each contestant from media across the state of Kansas in seven divisions was asked to submit three samples of their work. Hook won first in the paper's division after submitting: The Algorithm, The Auto Pilot and Finding Unity.

Hook will also receive first place honors for  a Local Business Story, The Story of Brown Dupree Oil Company.

Ulysses News Managing Editor Nancy Wallace-Kletecka nominated Hook for New Journalist of the Year. In that category, contestants had to submit seven bodies of work along with a nomination letter. Hook once again placed first.

Second place will be awarded to Hook for his piece covering a political candidate forum and he will receive third place honors for a political piece covering the results of a local election and for a business story about Skyland Grain.

Josephine Jellison will receive a third place award for her local business story Fall Was In The Air At Koehn’s Country Gardens' Annual Fall 'In The Country' Evening October 2.

Amanda Wallace-Murphy won two second place honors and one third place for graphic design. Wallace-Murphy won for marketing ads she had created for Leighty Ag Appraisal, Ace Hardware and Precision Auto Body. Wallace-Murphy passed away in February.

Wallace-Kletecka and former reporter Shawn Yorks won first place for the Pride 2025 edition, which included a section on 24 hours in the life of Ulysses. The duo also placed second in the Investigative Story category for covering a dog attack which took the life of local resident Alice Baker's pet.

Wallace-Kletecka will also receive first place honors for her investigative series covering a scam, which resulted in a $30,000 financial loss for former Ulysses resident Tom Grauberger. She will also take home first place honors for a photo package of scenes from Grant County Fair. Three other first place awards she will receive were in the business category and were for pieces she did on Good Dogs Hotdogs, Bear Creek, and Golden Mesa Casino.

Wallace-Kletecka will receive a second place award for her piece on downtown beautification, and a third place for her piece entitled 4000 Mile Run For Riders By Riders.

Hook and Wallace-Kletecka will share second place honors for a special section about local veterans.

Ulysses News staff will receive second place for their Community Service Project honoring local responders, a second place for Best Front Page, and third places for the Grant County 4-H Preview Magazine and third in design and layout excellence.
