Ulysses News Wins Awards From KPA

The Ulysses News will bring home awards for the second year in a row from the Kansas Press Association annual contest.

"We won't receive as many this year as we did last year, but I'm still very proud of what we did," said Nancy Wallace-Kletecka, Managing Editor/Publisher. "We were entered in to a different category as our circulation has gone up from last year."

The KPA has several different divisions for newspapers to enter dependent on how large their circulation is.

This year, Shawn Yorks will receive a first place award for a series of articles regarding a chicken ordinance debate in the City of Ulysses and a first place award for feature photo for the photo he took last year of the Dexter D. Harbour Post 79 American Legion Honor Guard shooting a 21-gun salute during a Memorial Day event.

Yorks and Wallace-Kletecka will receive a first place award for a special section "Anniversary Milestones".

Wallace-Kletecka will also receive a first place for best front page design, and two third place awards for columns she wrote, one on sportsmanship and the other on banana art.

The Ulysses News will also receive a second place award in news and writing excellence.

"I am very proud of our accomplishments this year," Wallace-Kletecka said. "We were up against a different division this year, so it makes it a little tougher.  But, that's okay - it's what competition is all about. I look forward to seeing what we can do next year. I expect good things as we continue to provide the very best in news coverage for Ulysses and Grant County."

Last year the Ulysses News brought home 14 awards and had the added honor of being the sweepstakes winner for their division.
