Upcoming 'Chalk The Walk' Contest Open To All Ages

The Ulysses News is excited to announce the very first "Chalk the Walk" contest.

"The theme for the contest is Seasons of Change," explained Amanda Wallace-Murphy, Marketing Representative for the Ulysses News.

Chosen to go along with the upcoming Fall season, staff at the local paper is hopeful the many talented artists in Grant County will sign up for the event.that is planned for September 22-26.

"Those who sign up will have a block of sidewalk assigned to them," said Wallace-Murphy. "We will be using the sidewalk in front of our office at 206 East Grant Avenue, and down to in front of Frazee Abstract for this event."

Cost for entries is only $5 each with the money going towards prizes for the winners. Prizes will be determined based on the number of entries.

There will be five winners in each of the following categories and specific dates for those in the categories to draw their art: youth Pre-K/Kindergarten, September 22; Youth first grade through third grade, September 23; youth fourth through sixth grade, September 24; teen, seventh through 12th grade, September 25; and adult, 18 years and older, September 26.

Those who participate can choose from one of the five challenges or attempt to incorporate more than one in their artwork: Best Interpretation of Theme, Best Use of Color; and Best 3-D Effect. There will also be a Judge's Choice and a People's Choice awarded.

Rules for the event are:

One entry form per person

Completed forms must be submitted and paid for by 4 p.m., September 19 to the Ulysses News Office

Artwork must be the individuals' own work

All work must be completed during the contest timeframe. Participants must come on their assigned day and time ONLY. Those contestants who continue to work on their artwork past when the time is up will be disqualified.

People's Choice award will be determined by voted provided in the office. Cost is $1 per vote and closes at contest end.

Basic supplies for the event will be provided by the Ulysses News or you are welcome to bring your own.

The following are approved supplies: chalk (solid or liquid), stencils, small water bucket, damp cloth or sponge, brushes or chalk holder.

Winners of the event will be announced October 2!
