Emergency responders were called to Ulysses High School the morning of January 27, just before 8 a.m., after a vehicle caught fire in the staff parking lot behind the building.

When Ulysses News Reporter Josephine Jellison arrived on the scene, the fire had already been extinguished due to the quick response of Grant County Emergency Services, Grant County Fire Department, and Ulysses Police Department. As a precaution, students and staff in the immediate area were evacuated while responders secured the scene.

UHS Principal Justin Coffey later sent a message to families addressing the incident:

“Shortly before 8 a.m., this morning a staff member's vehicle caught fire in the west staff parking lot. Students and staff in the vicinity of the parking lot were evacuated. The Ulysses Police and Fire Departments responded quickly and extinguished the fire. Thankfully there were no injuries. The vehicle has been removed from school property, and UHS has been given the all clear from the Ulysses Police and Fire Departments. We want to thank the Ulysses Police and Fire Department for their swift actions and for keeping the staff and students at Ulysses High School safe.”

Grant County Fire Chief John Crosby, identified the vehicle as a 2014 Ford Escape. The fire is believed to have been caused by a fuel leak. Two fire trucks responded to the incident.

Chief Crosby described the situation as a “cut and dry case,” noting there was no damage to school buildings or nearby vehicles, and no injuries were reported.

School operations were able to continue as normal following clearance from emergency officials.
