In the world of horse racing, the Von Hemel name has become synonymous with excellence, dedication and generations of success — a legacy that traces its roots back to the small southwest Kansas community of Manter.
The family’s racing story began in 1956 when Don Von Hemel started training racehorses, launching a career that would establish him as one of the most respected horse trainers in the nation. Over the course of his storied career, Don Von Hemel amassed 2,568 race victories and career purse earnings totaling more than $33.7 million.
Throughout the decades, the Von Hemel name became widely recognized in thoroughbred racing circles, not only for victories on the track but also for the family’s commitment to the sport and its horses.
Among the most famous horses associated with the family is Mariah’s Storm, whose remarkable comeback story captured national attention. After suffering a fractured cannon bone — an injury many believed would end the horse’s career — Mariah’s Storm made a stunning recovery and returned to racing. The inspirational story later helped inspire the motion picture Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, bringing additional recognition to the Von Hemel family’s impact on horse racing.
Don Von Hemel’s sons, Donnie K. Von Hemel and Kelly Von Hemel, followed in their father’s footsteps and built respected racing careers of their own. Both have continued the family tradition of excellence, earning widespread recognition throughout the horse racing industry.
That legacy was once again on display May 16 as members of the Von Hemel family competed on prominent racing stages across the country.
At Laurel Park in Maryland, Donnie K. Von Hemel’s horse Crupper entered the spotlight as a highly regarded contender with hopes of making an impact in the prestigious Preakness Stakes, one of the Triple Crown races. While the horse did not finish as strongly as many anticipated, simply competing on racing’s biggest stage added another notable chapter to the family’s long-standing presence in elite thoroughbred competition.
Meanwhile, at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, Kelly Von Hemel celebrated a victory as JJ’s Fight captured first place in the 5-furlong Maiden Special Weight race, continuing the winning tradition that has defined the family for generations.
From humble beginnings in Manter, Kansas, to nationally recognized racing venues, the Von Hemel family has built a legacy that remains deeply woven into the history of American horse racing — a story of perseverance, passion and enduring success.
