Beavers Sweep Ulysses In GWAC Battles

The Ulysses High School basketball teams continued their stretch of five of their last six games at home, with a Great Western Activities Conference battle against the Scott City Beavers. The Beavers were able to secure a sweep of the Tigers. The Lady Tiger varsity fell 54-19 and the Tiger boys lost 57-49. The girls dropped to 1-14 on the season and the boys 5-10 heading into Tuesday’s home games against Hugoton.

The girls hung with the Beavers in the first quarter, trailing 16-11 as Clarissa Sianuqui and Xitaly Castillo drained a pair of 3-pointers to keep the Lady Tigers competitive. But the Beavers outscored Ulysses 38-8 the rest of the way for the win. Scott City improved to 9-8 and sits at fourth in the GWAC.

Castillo led Ulysses with nine points, Sianuqui added five – all in the first half – Piper Schultz three and Erisbelie Alvarado two.

Julian Meraz led the boys with 19 points, Caden Ledesma 10, Parker Browning nine, Tyce Perez four, Aden Alvarado three,and Corban Dierking two.The JV boys fell 46-45 after the Beavers finally overcame what had been a Tiger lead with 38 seconds to play.

After Tuesday’s home games against Hugoton, Ulysses will celebrate homecoming Friday night against Goodland. The Cowboy girls sit at third in the GWAC and the Goodland boys lead the conference. Ulysses travels to Holcomb February 18 and wraps up the regular season at home February 24 with a non-conference battle against Syracuse.

Spearville 62, Satanta 34

Satanta dropped to 3-12 overall and 0-8 in the Southern Plains-Iroquois Conference.

Moscow 35, Deerfield 26

The Wildcats improved to 5-6 with the non-conference win while Deerfield dropped to 5-11.

Kinsley 53, Sublette 30

The Coyotes and Larks found themselves in a battle in the first half, as Kinsley and Sublette were tied in the first quarter and the Larks led 17-16 at the half. But Kinsley (3-11) went on a 22-4 run in the third quarter to pull away for the win. Sublette dropped to 0-15.

Stanton County 57, Elkhart 29

Avery Scott led the Trojans with 17 points and 22 rebounds as the girls from Johnson improved to 7-7. Karlee Nairn added 11 points and four boards, and Kynzi Fehringer 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Elkhart dropped to 4-10.

Southwestern Heights 38, Lakin 35

The Mustangs moved into a tie for third in the Hi-Plains Conference with Lakin the win as both teams are 7-6 overall.

February 6

Balko-Forgan 43, Moscow 38

The Wildcats visited the Oklahoma Panhandle and fell top the co-op known as the Bulls – formerly the Balko Bison and Forgan Bulldogs. The Bulls improved to 15-6.

February 7

Pawnee Heights 64, Satanta 38

Satanta dropped to 3-13 with the loss while the girls from Rozell improved to 2-14.

Minneola 57, Moscow 55

The Wildcats dropped to 5-8 on the season.

Elkhart 65, Rolla 25

The Lady Pirates dropped to 0-13 and Elkhart improved to 5-10.

Syracuse 44, Deerfield 27

Deerfield dropped to 5-12 on the season.

Southwestern Heights 37

In this classic between two of the top teams in the Hi-Plains Conference, stats were not available.

BOYS

February 4

Sublette 75, Kinsley 54

The Coyotes jumped to a 17-13 first quarter advantage but the Larks went on a 22-9 run in the second quarter and cruised to the win to improve to 6-10.

Spearville 79, Satanta 47

The Lancers raced to a 19-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Indians played a respectable game from that point. Spearville outscored Satanta 21-18 in the second quarter and just 18-16 in the third. Satanta dropped to 1-13 overall and Spearville improved to 11-5 and is third in the Southern Plains-Iroquois Conference.

Deerfield 59, Moscow 46

The Wildcats fell short of their first win and the Spartans improved to 7-9 as Colten Musil scored 20 points, recorded eight rebounds and had five steals. Michael Lira had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five steals while Trey Hill nine points and 15 boards.

Stanton County 56, Elkhart 48

The Trojans improved to 11-3 overall and remained third in the Hi-Plains Conference with the win. The Johnson boys eased to an 11-6 advantage in the first eight minutes, maintained a 28-19 lead at the half, and overcame a small Wildcat rally in the fourth.

David Crane dominated with 31 points and 15 rebounds and Gerardo Robles added 10 points and five rebounds for the Trojans.

Lakin 65, Southwestern Heights 45

The Broncs jumped to a 20-8 lead in the first quarter to set the tone, despite the Mustangs holding their own the rest of the night.

February 7

Minneola 68, Moscow 35

The Wildcats lost their 18th straight game dating to last season.

Satanta 56, Pawnee Heights 46

The Indians improved to 2-13 and both wins have come over Pawnee Heights, who dropped to 0-16 on the season.

Southwestern Heights 58,

Stanton County 43

The Trojans led 30-24 at halftime, but the Mustangs outscored Stanton County 12-2 in the third quarter and 22-11 in the fourth to win the Hi-Plains Conference battle.

Syracuse 67, Deerfield 41

The Spartans dropped to 7-10 overall but still lead the Santa Fe Trail Conference.

Elkhart 76, Rolla 42

Rolla dropped to 3-11 and Elkhart improved to 7-9.
