Last Friday’s Ulysses High School football contest had the chance to be a classic.

All the ingredients were there: two football programs in the rebuilding process, an interstate rivalry between two schools familiar with one another but rarely play on the varsity level, both schools are called the Tigers and their colors are black and orange. Plus, it was homecoming for Ulysses which was even more motivation.

The teams lived up to the “Battle of the Tigers” billing, fighting to a scoreless first half before the Oklahoma Panhandle visitors eased to a 12-6 win to spoil the home team’s homecoming.

Ulysses switched to more of a run-oriented offense against Guymon and the defense was able to keep Guymon in check as the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. Guymon opened the third quarter with a touchdown, while Ulysses got its lone score in the fourth quarter on a Julian Meraz kickoff return.

Freshman quarterback Tyce Perez was 4-for-16 passing for eight yards and two interceptions while carrying the ball 13 times for 47 yards.

Senior Joel Guaderrama rushed 20 times for 59 yards, freshman Stryker Berglund seven times for 31 yards, senior Jesus Miranda once for 11 yards, and junior Julian Meraz once for two yards. Meraz caught one pass for seven yards and senior Nicholas Martinez caught one for six yards. Guaderrama caught a pass for negative-five yards.

Meraz recorded 107 kick return yards for Ulysses and Preston Hittle added 12 return yards. Martinez added 20 punt return yards.

Stryker Berglund again led the defense with 14 total tackles, Meraz added seven, sophomore Malikah Garcia recorded four tackles including one for loss, Brody Britton had three tackles, as did Guaderrama, Parker Browning, Miranda and Hittle. Jorge Aguilar added two tackles, Martinez and Alex Hostetler one each. Hostetler sacked the Guymon quarterback once.

The Tigers will wrap up the season this Friday at home against the Liberal Redskins. Liberal comes into the game with a 4-2 overall record after a 14-7 Western Athletic Conference loss to Great Bend last Week. Guymon improves to 3-4 on the season and has three more games remaining on their independent freelance schedule: this week at Amarillo River Road, October 24 at Oklahoma City Patriots Homeschool, and November 8 at Carl and Lou McKinnon Memorial Stadium against Oklahoma City Classen School of Arts and Sciences.
