Hickok Elementary School celebrated Patriot Day on Friday, Sept. 11, marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The school welcomed local hometown heroes, including members of the Ulysses Police Department, EMTs and firefighters, to spend time with students and share more about the work they do each day.
Students had the opportunity to visit with the first responders, ask questions and learn more about their jobs and the important role they play in keeping the community safe.
The event was also a way for students and staff to show their appreciation for the men and women who serve the community.
Patriot Day is observed each year on Sept. 11 to remember the lives lost during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor the courage and sacrifice shown by first responders and everyday citizens.
For Hickok students, the day was not only about remembering the past, but also about recognizing the heroes who continue to serve right here at home. It gave students a chance to say thank you, learn from local first responders and better understand the meaning of service, courage and community.
