USD 214 issues statements on insurance grievance, community uncertainty

Ulysses USD 214 issued two statements Wednesday, Sept. 23, addressing an insurance-related grievance with the Grant County Teachers Association (GCTA) and uncertainty within the community.

In a joint statement, GCTA and USD 214 said insurance carriers had placed the district “in a bind that necessitated changes.” The two parties also acknowledged that communication lapses resulted in Article 14, Section E of their agreement not being “followed faithfully.”

Following a contractual discussion at a special board meeting, the district and GCTA agreed to form an insurance committee and share previous insurance quotes with the committee.

The parties also agreed to negotiate more transparent language during their next bargaining session. As part of the resolution, GCTA agreed to drop its grievance.

The statement was signed by Diana Nuñez, USD 214 Board of Education president, and Aaron Hammond, GCTA president.

In a separate letter to parents, Superintendent Dr. Joel Applegate addressed uncertainty surrounding the Ulysses community.

“With the uncertainty surrounding what is happening in our community, USD 214 will continue to focus on what we do well and continue to do great things for students,” Applegate wrote.

He said the district would strive to provide stability and maintain an environment where students can learn and feel safe and secure.

“There are many things that we cannot control outside our schools,” Applegate wrote. “We understand it is a time of unrest for many of our families.”

Applegate said USD 214 would continue to support the community, families and students and encouraged residents to show compassion and kindness toward one another.

“Thank you, Community of Ulysses,” he wrote.
